Terms of Service
Last updated: 23 October 2026
These Terms of Service (“Terms”) are a legal agreement between you and LGCY LTD, a company registered in England & Wales (company number 17413359) (“LGCY”, “we”, “us”, “our”). They govern your use of the LGCY service at lgcy.box (the “Service”).
Please read them carefully, and read our Privacy Policy, which forms part of these Terms. By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
1. Eligibility
You must be 18 or over and able to enter into a binding contract to use the Service. By using it, you confirm that you are.
2. What the Service does
LGCY lets you (“Owner”) prepare encrypted messages, files and credentials for people you choose (“Recipients”), to be released when a condition you set is met. You choose one of two release methods for each “event”:
- Guardian quorum — trusted people you nominate (“Guardians”) confirm, by voting, that a triggering event (such as your death) has occurred. When enough of them vote, the event is confirmed. Quorum events also use a periodic check-in (“dead man’s switch”), so if you stop checking in, the event escalates toward release.
- Scheduled release — you set a date and time, and the event is confirmed automatically on or after that moment, enforced independently of us.
Your content is encrypted in your browser before it reaches us. We cannot read it. Access is granted to Recipients only after the release condition is confirmed.
We may improve, change or add to the Service over time.
3. Licence to use the Service and intellectual property
- We grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensable and revocable licence to access and use the Service for your own personal, non-commercial purposes, in accordance with these Terms. This licence lasts only for as long as you comply with these Terms and your account remains active.
- All intellectual property rights in and to the Service — including the software, source code, design, text, graphics, and the LGCY name, logo and branding — are owned by LGCY LTD or our licensors and remain our property. Nothing in these Terms transfers any of those rights to you. The licence we grant is to use the Service; it gives you no right in the underlying software or its source code.
- Except as permitted by law or with our prior written consent, you must not: copy, modify, adapt, translate, reverse-engineer, decompile or disassemble any part of the Service; use the Service to build or assist a competing product; remove or obscure any proprietary or copyright notices; or sell, rent, lease, sublicense or otherwise commercially exploit the Service.
- Your content remains yours. You keep all rights in the content you upload. You grant us only the limited licence needed to encrypt, store, transmit, process and deliver that content to the Recipients you choose, for the purpose of providing the Service. We claim no ownership of your content and — because it is end-to-end encrypted — we cannot access its contents.
4. Your account and security
- You are responsible for the activity that happens under your account and for keeping your login credentials secure.
- During setup you create your key: the encryption key for your content, protected either by a passkey/biometric or, where your device does not support that, by a 4-digit device PIN — plus a one-time recovery code, which you always receive. You must store your recovery code somewhere safe and private.
- We provide account-recovery for sign-in (for example, resetting your password by email). This is separate from your key and does not recover your encryption keys.
- You must tell us promptly (hello@lgcy.box) if you believe your account has been compromised.
5. Free event, paying per event, and pricing
- Your first event is free. Every account may create and activate one event free of charge, as long as its content stays within the free allowance shown on our pricing page. Once activated, its release conditions run exactly as they do for a paid event. If it grows beyond the free allowance, it is priced like any other event (below). Deleting your free event does not give you another.
- Paying per event. Every other event, and a first event larger than the free allowance, is paid for once, per event, by size. When you activate an event you choose its size, and we show you the smallest size that holds what you have added. There is no subscription and nothing to renew. The sizes we offer and their prices are shown on our pricing page, and the price is shown at checkout before you pay. Prices are in pounds sterling (GBP). We take payment through Stripe.
- Making an event bigger. While an event is a draft or active, you can move it to a larger size by paying the difference between the price of its current size and the price of the larger one. A size only moves up: it cannot be exchanged for a smaller size or a partial refund, and it cannot be moved to another event.
- Size limits and files added before activation. Once activated, each event can hold content up to the size paid for it, or up to the free allowance for your free event, and no event can hold more than the largest size we offer. We may decline uploads that would take an event past its size. Before an event is activated you may add files to it, so that you can see what size it needs, but those files are held temporarily and are deleted 14 days after you add them unless, by then, the event has been paid for or, for your free event, activated, or you hold lifetime access (see the Privacy Policy). We may limit how much content an account holds at once in events that have not been paid for or activated.
- If you bought lifetime access before 23 October 2026. We no longer sell lifetime access. If you bought it before 23 October 2026, you keep what you bought: unlimited events on your account, without paying per event, within your account's storage allowance — the 1 GB included with lifetime access, plus any extra storage you have bought. You can still buy extra storage as a one-off top-up. Each top-up you buy is added permanently to your account's storage allowance; top-ups cannot be reduced or transferred away once purchased. We may decline uploads that would exceed your allowance.
- Changes to prices and to what is included. We may change our prices, introduce new paid features or optional add-ons, and start charging for something that is currently free or included — including changing the price of a size, the sizes we offer, and the free allowance. Any such change applies only going forward, to purchases made after it takes effect. It does not change the price of a purchase you have already made, and it does not take away a size you have already paid for on an event, or lifetime access or a storage allowance you have already bought — those stay as they were when you bought them, and if we start charging for something your existing purchase already includes, it stays included for you at no extra cost. Where a change is material, we will tell you in the way described in section 18 before it takes effect.
- If we have to withdraw something you have already paid for. Occasionally we may need to change or withdraw a feature included in your purchase — for example because a service it depends on is discontinued, or for legal or security reasons. We will not do this simply to sell you the same thing again. Where it happens and the change significantly disadvantages you, we will give you reasonable notice through the Service or by email, and will offer you a fair remedy, which may include a refund of part of what you paid.
6. Cancellation, the 14-day right, and refunds
Because the Service secures your content using permanent, irreversible infrastructure that we begin providing as soon as you use it:
- You consent to us beginning the Service immediately when you pay for an event or for a larger size, buy a storage top-up, or activate/upload, and you acknowledge that you therefore lose the statutory 14-day right to cancel for digital services under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013, to the extent the Service has been supplied.
- Payments you make to us — for an event, for a larger size, or for a storage top-up — are non-refundable once the Service has begun, except where a refund is required by law or we agree otherwise at our discretion.
- If a payment for an event is refunded or reversed. If we refund a payment for an event or a larger size, or it is reversed (for example through a card dispute), the event keeps the content it already holds, but its size falls back to the largest size you still hold a payment for, or to what it already uses if that is more — so it may accept no further uploads. An activated event is not deactivated, and nothing already released is withdrawn. If the event is left with no payment at all, any of its files that had not yet been permanently stored are treated as held temporarily again and may be deleted 14 days later (see the Privacy Policy).
- Deleting an event or your account forfeits what you have bought. If you delete an event, what you paid for it is lost; it is not refunded and cannot be moved to another event. If you delete your account, your payments for its events, and any lifetime access and storage top-ups, are lost and are not refunded. Creating a new account later does not restore them — you would be purchasing again.
Nothing in this section affects your rights where the Service is faulty or not as described.
7. Your keys and your content — a critical limitation
LGCY is end-to-end encrypted. This gives you strong privacy, but it means:
- We do not hold, and cannot access or reset, your encryption keys. If you lose all of your unlock methods — passkey/biometric, device PIN and recovery code — your content becomes permanently inaccessible, and we cannot recover it for you or your Recipients.
- You are solely responsible for safeguarding your recovery code and for keeping at least one working unlock method.
- You are responsible for the content you store and for ensuring you have the right to store and share it.
You must not use the Service to store or share anything unlawful, or content that infringes others’ rights or that you are not permitted to disclose.
8. Guardians and Recipients
- You are responsible for choosing your Guardians and Recipients and for the accuracy of the details you provide about them.
- By adding a Guardian or Recipient, you confirm you have a lawful basis to share their name and email with us and to have us contact them on your behalf. In respect of their personal data you act as a controller and we act as your processor (see the Privacy Policy).
- Guardians confirm using a secure digital signature, unlocked with their one-click link or their recovery code — either one alone is enough, and neither requires a wallet or a third-party account of their own. Their confirmation is recorded permanently in a public record and cannot be deleted. You should make Guardians aware of this.
- We cannot guarantee that any Guardian will act, vote, or vote in time, or that any Recipient will register or access their content. The Service coordinates these people; it does not compel them.
9. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- use the Service for any unlawful, fraudulent or harmful purpose;
- store or transmit malware, or content that is illegal, infringing, or that you have no right to share;
- attempt to gain unauthorised access to the Service, other users’ data, or our systems;
- interfere with, disrupt, or place unreasonable load on the Service, or circumvent security, rate limits or usage limits;
- resell or commercially exploit the Service without our written permission.
We may suspend or terminate access that breaches these Terms or that we reasonably believe threatens the Service or other users.
10. Not legal, financial or tax advice
LGCY is a technology tool, not a law firm or estate-planning service. The Service:
- is not a will, trust, power of attorney, or any other legal instrument, and does not by itself transfer property, assets or legal rights;
- does not constitute legal, financial, tax or professional advice; and
- is not a substitute for proper estate planning.
You should consult a qualified solicitor or professional adviser about your will, estate and any legally binding arrangements. Content released through LGCY has whatever legal effect (if any) it would have on its own; using LGCY does not give it additional legal force.
11. Release of content — how it works and its limits
- Confirmation is enforced automatically, not by us alone. For quorum events, enough Guardians must vote. For scheduled events, the release time must pass. We verify that confirmation independently before any key is released to a Recipient.
- Timing is not guaranteed to the minute. Release processes run on daily automated schedules. A scheduled or triggered release will occur on or after the intended moment — never earlier — but may be delayed by up to roughly 24 hours or more. You should not rely on the Service for time-critical delivery.
- The dead man’s switch depends on you. For quorum events, if you stop checking in, the event escalates and Guardians are asked to confirm. You can cancel a release you believe was triggered in error, before it is confirmed.
- We do not monitor the truth of any triggering event and are not responsible for a release (or non-release) that results from Guardians’ actions or inaction, missed check-ins, or the configuration you chose.
12. Permanent and irreversible storage
You acknowledge and agree that:
- encrypted content secured through the Service is written to permanent storage and cannot be deleted or amended by you or by us once written; and
- event and confirmation records are written to a permanent public record and cannot be deleted or amended.
Deleting an event or your account removes your records from our database and, once your keys are gone, renders any permanently-stored content undecryptable — but it cannot erase those permanent entries. Please consider this before you upload.
13. Third-party services
The Service relies on third-party infrastructure and service providers. We are not responsible for the acts, omissions, availability or content of third-party services, and outages or changes on their part may affect the Service.
14. Disclaimers
- The Service is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we exclude all implied warranties, including of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and uninterrupted or error-free operation.
- We do not warrant that content will be released at any particular time, that Guardians or Recipients will act, that the Service will be free of interruption, or that stored content will remain decryptable if you lose your keys.
- We are not liable for loss caused by matters beyond our reasonable control, including third-party service failures, network conditions, or your own loss of keys.
Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded or limited under English law, including liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or for fraud. If you are a consumer, you have statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 — including that a service will be performed with reasonable care and skill — which these Terms do not affect and which we do not seek to exclude.
15. Limitation of liability
Subject to section 14 (final paragraph):
- We are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for loss of data, loss of profit, loss of opportunity, or loss arising from content that was or was not released, or that became inaccessible because you lost your keys.
- Our total aggregate liability to you arising out of or in connection with the Service and these Terms is limited to the greater of (a) the total amount you have paid us, or (b) £100.
We recommend you keep your own independent copies of anything important. LGCY is a delivery and safekeeping tool, not your only copy of critical material.
16. Indemnity
You agree to indemnify us against reasonable claims, losses and costs arising from your breach of these Terms, your misuse of the Service, or content you store or share through it, to the extent caused by you.
17. Suspension and termination
- You may stop using the Service and delete your account at any time, subject to the steps described in section 10 of the Privacy Policy (which also explains what deletion does and does not remove).
- We may suspend or terminate your access if you materially breach these Terms, if required by law, or to protect the Service or other users. Where reasonable, we will give notice.
- Sections that by their nature should survive termination (including 3, 7, 10, 12, 14, 15, 16 and 19) continue to apply.
18. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify account holders by email or through the Service, and update the “Last updated” date. Continuing to use the Service after changes take effect means you accept them.
19. Governing law and disputes
These Terms and any dispute or claim arising out of or in connection with them (including non-contractual disputes) are governed by the law of England and Wales. The courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction, except that if you are a consumer resident elsewhere in the UK you may also bring proceedings in your local courts.
